Type 1 Diabetics Are Prohibited from Fasting, but 63.6% of Patients Successfully Complete Their Fast

Dr. Wiam Hussein, an endocrinology and diabetes specialist and fellow of the American College of Endocrinology, revealed that more than 100 million people with diabetes fast during Ramadan, and this number continues to grow. The Bahrain Diabetes Association's 2010 study indicated that 63.6% of patients with diabetes successfully complete their fast during Ramadan. However, Dr. Hussein emphasized that individuals with type 1 diabetes, due to their high risk of severe complications, are advised not to fast unless under strict medical supervision. The article highlights the different risk levels for diabetic patients during fasting, with pregnant women, the elderly, and children with type 1 diabetes being particularly vulnerable. Dr. Hussein stressed the importance of educating the community about the risks associated with fasting for those with diabetes and the need for medical guidance to avoid life-threatening situations.
