New Hormone Therapy for Thyroid Cancer Patients Introduced in Bahrain

For the first time in Bahrain, the Gulf Diabetes Specialist Center has introduced a new hormone therapy for thyroid cancer patients. Dr. Wiam Hussein, an endocrinologist and medical director at the center, announced the use of a hormone called Thyrogen (recombinant human thyroid-stimulating hormone) to aid in the detection and treatment of cancerous thyroid cells post-surgery. This hormone helps in identifying and eliminating residual cancer cells without the need for patients to stop their thyroid hormone replacement therapy, which is crucial for their quality of life.

Previously, patients had to stop their thyroid hormone therapy for several weeks before undergoing diagnostic tests, which caused significant discomfort and symptoms of hypothyroidism. The new treatment with Thyrogen allows for more accurate testing and effective treatment of thyroid cancer, improving the overall quality of care for patients. This development represents a significant advancement in the management of thyroid cancer in Bahrain.
